5 Natural Homemade Cleaning Recipes for the Bathroom - (2024)

If you’ve decided to switch to natural homemade cleaning products for your home you’ll be pleased to know that you can use the same cleaning ingredients to make up cleaning recipes for the whole house. And, you can use the same general 50/50 white vinegar and water spray for the Kitchen and Bathroom.

However, if you’re specifically looking for bathroom cleaners then these 5 natural homemade cleaning recipes for the bathroom will be perfect for you.

Using natural homemade cleaning recipes will also help you reduce your plastic waste and have a greener healthier home with less chemicals. I think you’ll love these natural homemade cleaning recipes for the Bathroom.

To start making natural homemade cleaning recipes for the Bathroom you will need:

1. Bicarbonate of Soda (bicarb) – this has so many uses and is made from a naturally mined mineral trona, which apparently there is plenty of.

2. White Vinegar – this is basically an alcoholic liquid that has been allowed to sour, it’s bee around for a long time. Apparently around 5000 BC the Babylonians were using the fruit of the date palm to make wine and vinegar to be used as food and a preservative or pickling agent. For cleaning purposes, I would use Distilled White Vinegar. Remember – never use vinegar based cleaners on granite, marble, stone or ceramic surface.

3. Rubbing Alcohol / Surgical Spirit – is usually isopropyl alcohol or in the UK it’s equivalent is surgical spirit. It is used as an antiseptic and cleaning product. All rubbing alcohols are unsafe for human consumption so should be kept out of the reach of children and make sure you clearly label any cleaning products you make that include it.

4. Castile Soap – named after the olive oil-based soaps originating in Castile, Spain. Castile soap can be either liquid or solid bar form, but it is made only from vegetable oils such as coconut, olive, and hemp oils and never from animal fats. Don’t mix Castile Soap and Vinegar as they cancel each other out and won’t work.

5. Washing Soda – also known as soda ash, can be an irritant so wear gloves when using.

6. Essential Oils (or fresh woody herbs) – naturally occurring plant compounds that are useful for adding a lovely scent to your homemade products and are also antibacterial, just be careful not to use them neat. My favourites are lemon, tea tree, rosemary and lavender.

Handy for wiping down surfaces in between weekly cleaning

YOU’LL NEED:

• Glass jar with lid
• 1 cup of cooled boiled or distilled water
• ¼ cup of white vinegar
• 12 drops of Tea Tree essential oil
• 12 drops lemon essential oil
• 15 to 20 cloth squares

HOW TO:

• Put the cloths in the jar
• Mix the water, vinegar and essential oils
• Pour the mixture over the cloths and allow to soak in
• Wash after use and make a new batch

Remember – Never use vinegar based cleaners on marble, stone, ceramic or granite surfaces and when making cleaners with water make small batches and use within 1 week

This is great for giving your bath a good deep clean

YOU’LL NEED:

• 50g Bicarbonate of Soda
• 1 Tbsp Castile Soap or Eco Friendly Washing Up Liquid
• Warm water

HOW TO:

• Combine everything together to make a soft but not too runny paste.
• Use with a non abrasive unsponge to clean bathroom surfaces.
• Rinse with warm water
• You can finish off with a general spray

This recipe doesn’t contain vinegar so is great for using on stone, granite, ceramic or marble surfaces

YOU’LL NEED:

• Glass spray bottle
• ½ Tbsp washing soda
• 1 Tbsp castile soap
• 2 cups of hot water
• Approx 20 drops of essential oils (not citrus if using on granite)

HOW TO:

• Add washing soda & castile soap to the bottle.
• Pour two cups of hot water in and shake well to mix (use cooled boiled or distilled water)
• Add the essential oils to the bottle when cool and shake again.
• Rinse surfaces with warm water after use

Note: Washing Soda can irritate skin so use household gloves when cleaning

YOU’LL NEED:

• Glass jar
• 100g Bicarbonate of Soda
• 45g Citric Acid
• 1 Tbsp Eco Washing Up Liquid or Castile Soap
• 20 drops of essential oil – your choice

HOW TO:

• Mix Bicarb and Citric Acid together in a bowl
• Add the eco washing up liquid or Castile Soap
• Drop in the essential oils
• Mix together with a spoon until it holds together when squeezed in your hands, spray a little water or witch hazel on if it’s too dry
• Press into a silicone mould / ice cube tray or mould in your hands and place on baking paper
• Allow to dry overnight and then store in an airtight container
• To freshen your loo just drop a bomb into the bowl and allow to fizz, leave and flush.

Be careful not to add too much liquid as it will start the fizzing reaction prematurely !

Note: be careful if you store in an airtight container as the citric acid and bicarb may start to react if they get damp and start to give off carbon dioxide; that’s what makes them fizz 🙂

YOU’LL NEED:

• Glass Spray Bottle
• 1 ½ cups water
• ¼ cup Rubbing Alcohol
• ¼ cup white vinegar
• Essential oils

HOW TO:

• Mix the water (cooled boiled or distilled) rubbing alcohol (surgical spirit) and vinegar in a spray bottle and shake.
• Add your essential oils, Tea Tree or 4 Thieves Blend have antibacterial properties.

Remember – don’t use vinegar cleaners on stone, granite, ceramic or marble and don’t keep cleaners diluted with water for more than 1 week, make small batches
