This homemade onion soup mix recipe is made with just a handful of simple ingredients, most of which are probably already in your pantry. Now you can enjoy all the flavor of a typical onion soup mix without all the unrecognizable additives. I’ve included recipes for using your onion soup mix as well.
Onion soup mix is a pantry staple for me. With just one packet of my onion soup mix recipe, I can make a delicious meal out of pork chops or either a pork or beef roast. It’s also my secret ingredient in my easy and delicious meatloaf recipe.
Why I made this Onion Soup Mix Recipe…
The first time I read the ingredients on a pack of onion soup mix from the store, I knew that I had to find a way to make it myself. The store brand had corn starch, sugar, artificial colors, corn syrup, and a few things I couldn’t pronounce. Some store brands of onion soup mix also have MSG in them, which gives both me and my son migraines.
I didn’t want any questionable ingredients in my food, so I make my own onion soup mix recipe now. It also saves me money on my grocery bill, making it well worth my time.
The spices and herbs that I use in this copycat onion soup mix recipe are items that I always have in my kitchen pantry. I make most of my dry mixes, like chili seasoningand ranch dressing mix. I grow many of my herbs, but the rest of the herbs are bought in bulk from a local bulk food store. I think it’s important to get the best spices and herbs that you can find because they make such a big difference in your final recipe.
Another perk to making your own mixes is that you can make them to suit your dietary needs. Beef stock granules are high in sodium, and so are the store bought packets of onion soup mix. You can find low sodium beef granules at most supermarkets.
If you follow a gluten free diet, this is a great substitute for store-bought onion soup mixes, since one of the name brands of onion soup mixes can have gluten in it. Just make sure that you get gluten free beef granules.
Onion Soup Mix Recipe

Mix all ingredients together. You can double, triple, or even quadruple the recipe if you want.
Use immediately in your recipe or store in an airtight container until you need it.

Combine onion soup mix and a can of cream of mushroom soup or my cream of anything soup mix. Add one cup water and pour over a beef roast.
When I made a pork roast, I pour the onion soup mix over the roast and add a cup of water before I cook it.
To make meatloaf, combine 2 pounds of ground beef, 3/4 cups rice, 1/4 cup onion soup mix, 2 eggs, 3/4 cup milk or water, and 1/3 cup ketchup. Bake at 350 degrees for an hour.

French onion soup, or soupe à l'oignon gratinée, is a classic French dish made with caramelized onions and beef stock or broth. The soup is topped with bread and cheese, then gratinéed to rich, gooey perfection.
Is there a difference between onion soup and French onion soup? Onion soup usually requires a combination of a variety of onions. French onion soup is traditionally made with yellow onions. Also, French onion soup is always made with beef stock while onion soup uses any type of stock or broth.
What can you use instead of onion powder? Instead of onion powder you can use: grated fresh onion, shallots, fennel bulbs, scallions, garlic powder, onion salt, or celery.
Instead of 1 tablespoon of onion flakes, try 2 to 3 tablespoons of jarred minced onion, 3/4 to 1 teaspoon of onion powder, 3/4 to 1 teaspoon of onion salt (and reduce the amount of any other salt added to the recipe), 1/2 cup chopped fresh or frozen onion, or 2/3 cup of chopped green onions.
A few sprigs of thyme and a bay leaf elevate the soup even more, but I take it a step further, adding a splash of fish sauce for complexity and depth—don't worry, it won't taste fishy—and a hit of cider vinegar to balance some of that oniony sweetness.
Place sliced onions and butter into slow cooker, and mix until onions are thoroughly coated. Stir in bread and chicken broth. Cover, and cook on LOW for 10 to 18 hours or on HIGH 4 to 5 hours, stirring occasionally. Stir well during last hour.
French onion soup is the ultimate comfort food. Onions get slowly cooked until sweet and caramelized, then simmered in rich broth until they're practically falling apart. To finish it off, toasted bread is added to give it that lovable crisp-gone-soggy texture and a generous amount of Gruyère cheese is melted on top.
When you are sauteing onions to build flavor as a base for your dish (soup, tomato sauce, you name it), the yellow onion is your friend. That being said, white onions are a totally acceptable substitute for yellow, especially if you're cooking them.
The easiest way to thicken your French onion soup is with flour. You can also use cornstarch if you don't have any flour. Remember to never add the flour or cornstarch directly to the soup – otherwise you run the risk of it clumping.
Apart from it being a good nourishing broth, it may have been a way to check for wounds perforating the stomach, ie. if you could smell onions coming from a gut wound, you knew you had troubles.
Soaking and cooking them in water can help to break down these sugars and make them more easily digestible. Reducing cooking time: Soaking beans and legumes before cooking them can help to reduce the cooking time. They will cook faster and more evenly, so you don't have to wait as long for them to be ready to eat.

Use onion powder as a great substitute for onion soup mix. Onion powder takes on the onion flavor and it is perfect when you recipe contains other seasoning.
One tablespoon of onion powder equals one cup of fresh onion
Because onion powder is so potent, you'll need a greater amount of fresh onion as a substitute. If your recipe calls for one tablespoon of onion powder, you'll have to use an entire cup of fresh onion to achieve the same onion flavor.
