Peach Fritters Donut Recipe (1)

Southern peach fritters may be created with a batter, but I wanted peach fritters that use a yeast dough, like my favorite bakery doughnut Apple Fritters.

These doughnuts are easy to make withRhodes’ pre-made frozen dough, because yeast dough that I don’t have to make from scratch is always a win!

You can thaw the rolls covered with sprayed plastic wrap in the refrigerator overnight if you want to make them for breakfast the next day.

You can also thaw the rolls at room temperature for a couple hours until they are thawed, but not risen too much.

Other than that you just need fresh peeled and diced peaches, cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar for the donuts. We’ll talk about the glaze later.

How to Make Peach Fritters

  • Combine the diced peaches with the brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside.
  • Cut each roll into 6 pieces and alternately layer the dough pieces and diced peaches into a large bowl. Sprinkle in flour here and there. *NOTE: Use a slotted spoon to drain the juices from the peaches as you add them to the dough. It can get super sticky with all that liquid.
  • Gently fold the dough and peaches together two to three times and empty onto a floured surface. Sprinkle the top of the dough with additional flour and flatten with hands. Cut dough into 12 pieces. Shape with hands until round, and flatten onto a prepared baking sheet. Cover with sprayed plastic wrap.
  • Allow donuts to rest for 15-20 minutes at room temperature.

  • Heat oil in a large pot to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.Gently scoop up the dough with a floured spatula (turner) and carefully flip the peach fritters over into the hot oil. (May cook several at a time, but don’t overcrowd the doughnuts.)
  • Cook roughly 3 to 4 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Remove and place on a cooling rack with paper towels underneath to catch any excess oil.

  • Prepare the glaze in a large flat dish by whisking the powdered sugar together with the peach nectar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth. Set aside.
  • Glaze donuts while still slightly warm. Place a donut into the glaze, and turn it over. Spoon glaze over the peach fritter as needed to cover the whole surface. Shake off excess glaze. Place the donut back onto the cooling rack and allow glaze to set.

Other Tips and Suggestions

  • Can I use canned peaches in place of fresh peaches? Yes, you can. I would use peaches in natural juices, drained really well and patted dry with a paper towel.
  • Don’t want deep fried fritters? Try putting the fruit and dough into a bundt pan like this apple fritter monkey bread and bake it! Or just bake the donuts on the sheet tray at 350˚F for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Drizzle the glaze on top instead of dipping the fritters in the glaze, if needed.
  • How long do these peach fritters keep? Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature up to 3 days. Eat as-is or nuked in the microwave for 10 seconds.

Enjoy these peach fritters for breakfast or dessert. They are pretty simple to make (maybe slightly messy though) and taste amazing.

Has anyone tried these in the air fryer?

That should be fine. They can even be baked, but they will be harder to glaze because they may not hold their shape as well.

    FAQs

Are donut peaches good for baking? ›

Donut peaches are great for eating out of hand, for baking, and for adding to recipes. They don't even need to be peeled as they have very little “fuzz.”

    Is a fritter a doughnut? ›

The dictionary definition of a donut is “a small fried cake of sweetened dough, typically in the shape of a ball or ring.” So by that definition a fritter is not a donut.

How to store apple fritters? ›

You can store the cooled apple fritters in an airtight container at room temperature for about two days, in the refrigerator for up to a week, or in the freezer for up to three months.

Why are donut peaches so expensive? ›

Of the three farmers I spoke with at the Union Square Greenmarket, two had started growing flat peaches in the past five years. Since they're susceptible to blight and finicky in their development (the skins split as the peaches grow outwards), they demand a higher price.

Is it better to bake or fry Doughnuts? ›

Baked doughnuts are smaller, baking powder driven and more compact. A typical fried glazed donut will be around 269 calories, while a baked donut will have much fewer. The difference is the fact that you won't be dealing with any extra fat from the oil from frying when you bake.

    What makes a fritter a fritter? ›

A fritter is a portion of meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables, or other ingredients which have been battered or breaded, or just a portion of dough without further ingredients, that is deep-fried.

Does Krispy Kreme make fritters? ›

Apple Fritters are a classic. Handmade with apple filling, diced apples and plenty of cinnamon, this new fritter is glazed to perfection.

What is a fritter vs donut? ›

The thing that really separates donuts from fritters is the dough itself. Donuts, real quality donuts, are made from a yeast risen dough, similar to bread dough. Fritters are made from a chemically risen dough, usually baking powder. It's actually a quick bread batter, not a dough.

Why are my fritters not crispy? ›

The most common causes for soggy fritters are too much batter (basic flour and egg batter like used in pancakes will never cook up crispy), and whatever you're frittering leeches too much water when cooking.

Why are my homemade apple fritters soggy? ›

Why are my apple fritters soggy? This is most likely the result of oil temperature. If your oil is too cool, your fritters will take a long time to fry and will end up greasy.

How do you keep fritters from falling apart? ›

    Get the skillet searing hot.

A hot skillet will start cooking the fritters as soon as they hit the pan. That helps sear a crust on each fritter that will hold them together. A pan that's too cool will create a lackluster crust that could result in a floppy fritter if you're not careful.

What kind of peach looks like a donut? ›

The flat peach, (Prunus persica var. platycarpa, formerly also called var. compressa) also known as the doughnut/donut peach or Saturn peach, is a variety of peach with pale yellow fruit that is oblate in shape.

Can you eat the skin of a donut peach? ›

If you're like me, the following news will come as a shock: Peach skin is totally safe (even healthy!) to eat and a lot of people eat the fruit without peeling.

Will a peach turn brown if I cut it? ›

This is known as enzymatic browning. Keep cut fruits, such as apples, pears, bananas, and peaches from turning brown by: Coating them with an acidic juice such as lemon, orange, or pineapple juice. Use a commercial anti-darkening preparation with fruits, such as Fruit-Fresh®*, and follow the manufacturer's directions.

What are donut peaches good for? ›

    Heath Benefits

Donut peaches fight off free radicals and reduce your risk of cancer, including colorectal and breast cancer – all thanks to their vitamin C and high fiber!

What type of peach is best for baking? ›

If you like to bake your peaches into warm, comforting desserts, look for yellow freestone peaches at your local orchard or farmer's market. Yellow peaches have a sweet and tangy flavor that balances out sugary baked goods. Their naturally firm flesh bakes to a soft — but not mushy — texture.

What are donut peaches used for? ›

They're best for snacking out of hand or in recipes where that deliciously fuzzy skin can be left intact. Salsa and muffins are two personal favorites.

Are donut peaches better than regular peaches? ›

Donut peaches might be a tad pricier than regular round peaches, but many peach lovers believe that a super sweet and juicy donut is worth taking for a spin. Keep an eye out for their cousins, the donut nectarine.
