Sweet potato casserole ingredients

  • Yams – My preference is canned yams, but you could use fresh yams or sweet potatoes if they are well cooked.
  • Butter – Please don’t substitute margarine. We like salted butter, but unsalted will also work.
  • Eggs – Regular eggs, nothing fancy to see here.
  • Vanilla – Definitely use pure vanilla extract, not imitation vanilla when cooking or baking.
  • Sugar – Plain white granulated sugar.
  • Flour – All purpose flour. Do not use self rising flour as we do not require additional salt or leavening agents in this recipe.
  • Brown sugar – We usually use light brown sugar, but dark brown sugar will work in this recipe too.
  • Almonds – Slivered almonds add the perfect amount of crunch and nuttiness to this recipe.

We actually don’t cook the sweet potatoes (or yams in this case) for our sweet potato casserole, instead I like to use canned yams.

If you prefer to use freshly baked sweet potato, then I’d suggest baking them in the oven, cooking the sweet potatoes in the crock pot or even steaming them in the microwave! Make sure your sweet potatoes are cooked until soft all the way through.

How long do you bake sweet potato casserole?

How long you bake sweet potato casserole depends on how deep your casserole is. Aas you can see from the pictures I tend to make mine on the deep side and so will cook it about 60 minutes in a 350 degree oven.

What type of canned yams in sweet potato casserole?

I am partial to Bruce’s canned yams for this recipe. That said, if you don’t have canned available, fresh baked sweet potatoes work as well. I find sweet potatoes in the slow cooker give the creamiest result.

How do you reheat sweet potato casserole?

If you’re heating it from frozen, we suggest letting it thaw on the counter for a few hours and then popping it in a 350 degree oven until it’s hot throughout (about 30 – 45 minutes).

If you’re just wanting a scoop of leftovers, a quick 30 – 60 seconds in the microwave should do nicely.

Sweet potato casserole is a holiday recipe in our home so we typically serve it alongside a perfectly roasted turkey and crock pot ham. For sides I love macaroni and cheese, roasted green beans, and dinner rolls.

FAQs

Why put egg in sweet potato casserole? ›

A really good sweet potato casserole filling should be light and moist, not dense. If it's dense, then you may not have added an often overlooked ingredient—an egg. An egg adds lift, structure and volume and makes the filling more custard-like.

How do you make sweet potato casserole not runny? ›

Eggs and cream help stabilize the dish and prevent it from becoming too runny (a common complaint with many sweet potato casserole recipes). Make it as smooth or chunky as you like!

Are candied yams and sweet potato casserole the same thing? ›

Spoiler: They're not the same vegetable.

That's because sweet potatoes and yams are in fact very different vegetables that we've come to refer to interchangeably for a number of reasons over the years. While a dish may arrive at your table calling itself "candied yams," it may well have been made with sweet potatoes.

How to tell when sweet potato casserole is done? ›

How do you thicken potato casserole? ›

Whisk together equal parts cornstarch and cold water in a small bowl. Use one tablespoon of cornstarch per cup of liquid you would like to thicken. Stir out all the lumps. A few minutes before your casserole is done, add it a little at a time until you are happy with the thickness.

No need to wrap your potatoes in foil though—you want them to really feel that oven heat, rather than steam. The skins: Removing the skin is completely up to you. I personally enjoy the texture of sweet potato skin, and you'll get some added nutrients and fiber.

If your sweet potato casserole turned out “watery”, its usually because you forgot to add eggs; you didn't let your casserole have enough time to set up after baking or you used fresh sweet potatoes and didn't boil them long enough before mashing.

What does adding an extra egg do to baked goods? ›

Eggs are responsible for giving baked goods structure, which means the amount you use directly affects the resulting texture. Using too few eggs will make your desserts dense, but using too many will make them rubbery. The explanation for this lies in the fact that eggs are made up of protein.
